Combined fleet report 18th September

Light winds for 11 yachts

Many thanks to those members who indicated which yacht they would be sailing, also those who let me know they couldn’t attend the AGM.

In all we had 7 DF95s and 4 DF65s.  Conditions on the lake looked decidedly challenging with very light NE’ly zephyrs at 0930 progressing to WNW zephyrs towards the
end of racing at 1130.

It was decided to send off the 65s 1 minute ahead of the 95s for the first one lap race to test the waters as it were. In fact it turned out really well with all yachts finishing within a few minutes of one another.  For the subsequent races we had two laps and again it worked reasonably well in that there were no long waiting periods for yachts to finish.

It was good to see Cameron Torpy our youngest member (aged 11) taking on the older members on in the 65s using a combination of the club's 65 and the Secretary’s old A+ sails. He did remarkably well in the first few races but a combination of water leaking into the boat and difficulty having to concentrate for long periods of time  took  its toll.
So with renewed enthusiasm he sailed the Secretary’s 65 and did pretty well in very trying circumstances…well done Cameron.

In the 65s the first race was a bolter for Lennie White who ended up with 3 wins and 7 seconds for a nett 9 points, but our Treasurer Allan Pride strung together an impressive 5 wins and a second dropping two 3rds  for a winning score of nett 7 points.
In 3rd place with nett 16 pts was Rob Turton who started off with a couple of 2nds in the first 3 races but couldn’t match the pace of the two leaders.  Well done everyone.

In the 95s there were some photo finishes which made for some really good tactical racing. Although Commodore Kim Klaka made a slow start in the first  and 3rd races, he showed the way with a fine set of numbers winning 3 races, and coming 2nd in another three for a nett score of 9 pts. Only 2 pts behind was Wayne Coleman also with 3 wins but a nett of 11pts.  Adam Viney with 1 win had a nett 14pts for 3rd place.  The other heat winner was Kim Swarbrick who took out the first race and managed 4th place with nett 15pts. Full results below.

Congratulations to all the place getters who were presented with our exclusive highly valued pennants courtesy of Guy Skinner. Thanks and well done to everyone for making the morning such a pleasant one and assisting with course laying and buoy retrieval.

Cheers.

Keith Morris, Wanderers RSC Secretary
